ANN ARBOR, MI — A very popular local “Latin inspired” restaurant that truly disappoints. Cafe Habana serves “Cuban and Latin inspired food and drinks” at three Michigan locations; Ann Arbor, Royal Oak, and Traverse City. Although very, very busy throughout the night, Cafe Habana’s Ann Arbor location provided Fat Freddy sub-par drinks and uninspired dishes.

It’s no secret that Fat Freddy loves a family owned restaurant. Sure, every now and then one can take comfort in knowing that no matter where you are in the world, a McDonald’s French Fry will taste like a McDonald’s French Fry… but… even better than that is a family owned restaurant that is unique, comfortable, and genuinely a great place to eat.

When I returned to Gainesville from South Florida, I knew that finding excellent Latin cuisine would prove difficult. For many years, the only place to get a decent Empanada (pastry-style turnover, generally stuffed with meat or chicken) in town was Emiliano’s. Unfortunately for most of us, often times Emiliano’s would stuff their versions with eclectic combinations; leaving a void for those wanting a simply made meat or chicken Empanada.
