When you visit Las Vegas, you’ll more than likely end up on Las Vegas Boulevard. Once you get used to the flashing lights, the 100 foot wide television sets, and the 4000 room Hotel/Casinos, you’ll notice something that makes you take a quick little double take.

Right near the MGM Grand and the Aladdin is a McDonald’s… which of course is nothing special… everyone is used to seeing a McDonald’s… But this is different because directly next to the McDonald’s is another hamburger restaurant.

fatburger.jpgMy first thought was “What genius decided to put a hamburger joint next to a McDonald’s?” Even in the world gambling headquarters, this seemed like a very risky bet. But then I started thinking along the lines of Tony Montoya in that this place has to have pretty big “meatballs” (keeping this G Rated) to go up against a McyD’s.

It should be no surprise (I mean look at the picture folks) that the burger joint in question is Fatburger. Taking a throw back to classic burger stands, Fatburger is filled with chrome, neon, black & white tiled floors, a jukebox, and many other trinkets to establish itself as a clean, fun place to eat.

That being said, if you come to Fatburger because of the atmosphere, then you most likely took the little bus to school.

Fatburger can be successful next to a McDonald’s for one reason and one reason only; their burgers are nothing short of fantastic. Each order is prepared individually based on the customer’s request. When placing an order, each customer chooses a temperature, choice of standard condiments (Mustard, Relish, Onions, Pickles, Tomato, Lettuce, and Mayo), and choice of “Add-ons” (Cheese or Egg – $0.50, Bacon or Chili – $0.80, or Ranch Dressing – $0.25). Then, your burger is prepared right in front of you on the oversized grill.

I generally choose a King Burger Combo with Onions and Bacon. The combo cost $7.29 and came with a drink and fries. With the Bacon and extra side of onion rings, my total was less than $10.00 and, more importantly, my severe hunger was destroyed. If you happen to have room for dessert, their hand-scooped shakes looked amazing.

The bottom line: Perhaps the best burger you’ll ever eat. And this comes from a man who has eaten many, many burgers. If you think McDonald’s makes great Hamburgers… stick with that. This is for people who know the truth about the Tooth Fairy, Santa Claus, and know that, to paraphrase Mr. Miagi, when a burger’s done right, no can defend.
