Describe my Bucca di Beppo experience in just one word? No problem: Loud.
Bucca di Beppo is one of those restaurants that you end up going to for just the atmosphere and “going out” value. You definitely don’t go for the food. I cook much better than Bucca, and that will never get you more than three boilers.
Immediately you can tell that a tremendous amount of money went into the décor. I dare you to find five square inches of wall without a picture on it. And the pictures are great; black & white throwbacks to the 40’s and 50’s. Table clothes are red and white checker pattern and floors feel like real hardwood.
Menu’s are listed on the walls and don’t let the prices totally shock you. A small portion will feed three big eaters easily. A normal family of four can get by with a single order of spaghetti and most likely take some home for later.
Should you get the spaghetti, be warned… the meatballs are huge. Baby’s head sized huge.
Avoid the appetizers. Not only because you won’t need it, but also because they just weren’t that good. The Calamari sticks with you for days and although people rave about their garlic bread, it didn’t impress me at all. It was very salty and the flavors didn’t blend whatsoever.
The menu is traditional southern Italian. Lots of spaghetti choices, red sauces, cannelloni, etc.
Again, these portions are HUGE. But at 19.95 for an order of tortellini, they had better be. Speaking of which… if the service I had was normal, 15% gratuity could count as charity.
The bottom line is that the food is just not anything to talk about. The portions will keep you talking for days– but the food will have you reaching for the Anti-acid tablets all night.
You don’t go to Bucca di Beppo’s for the food. You go because it’s loud, unique, and if you go with a good group of people, you may just laugh and have a good time.
If it were based on food/service alone, they’d be lucky to get two boilers, but with the whole package… 3 boilers.
